About the show

Madeleine Elkins Trio (Vancouver)
Inspired by exploratory artists like Bill Frisell and Mary Halvorson, guitarist Madeleine Elkins’s intricate compositions start at the crossroads of jazz, folk, and rock, then move freely from there. With bassist William Chernoff and drummer Kevin Romain, Elkins merges contemporary jazz with her love of modern bluegrass and post-punk guitar sounds. A member of Sister Jazz Orchestra and Spindle!, she’s performed with Mali Obomsawin, Wayne Horvitz, and Kaïa Kater. The trio's debut, Brighton Train, was released in 2025 on the Infidels Jazz label.

Allotropes
Allotropes is the Victoria-based trio of bassist Trav Short, drummer Miles Fuller and bass clarinetist, saxophonist and composer Shane Krause. Krause’s compositions draw from the whole history of jazz and improvised music, from traditional chordal jazz to post-bop experimentalism. Shane Krause has performed throughout North America as an improviser and as a member of indie rock bands, including They Shoot Horses, Don’t They and The Secret Mommy Quintet. He recently released a solo record of his compositions recorded with overdubbed clarinets and saxophones on Afterday Audio. He is also currently a member of improv-psych band Cosmic Foam. Trav Short is a double bassist and string repair technician who not only plays wonderful bass but makes sure that many of your favourite local bassists’ (and cellists’, violists’ and violinists’) instruments play wonderfully. He has performed extensively with guitarist Wes Carroll and vocalist Sara Marreiros. Miles Fuller is a busy drummer who’s worked with a who’s who of the Victoria jazz community, including Ryan Oliver, David Santana, Monik Nordine and Rowan Farintosh.

Tickets $15 advance, $20 at the door.
