About the show

The Orange Light and the fiftyfifty arts collective present renowned Chicago improviser/composer/saxophonist/clarinetist Ken Vandermark in a trio with Vancouver-based musicians ; bassist James Meger and drummer Kenton Loewen.  Unlike most Orange Light concerts, this one will take place in the spacious setting of Centennial United Church's historic sanctuary. (Directly above the Orange Light, through the main church entrance) 

Ken Vandermark is an avant-garde composer, improviser, saxophonist/clarinetist, curator, and writer; in 1999 was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in music. He moved to Chicago from Boston in 1989 and has worked continuously from the early 1990s onward, both as a performer and organizer in North America, Europe, Latin America, Japan, and Ethiopia, recording in a large array of contexts, with many internationally renowned musicians (such as Fred Anderson, Ab Baars, Martin Blume, Peter Brötzmann, Sylvie Courvoisier, Tim Daisy, Kris Davis, Dieb 13, Hamid Drake, Terrie Ex, Mats Gustafsson, Elisabeth Harnik, Steve Heather, Didi Kern, Kent Kessler, Christof Kurzmann, Thomas Lehn, Paul Lytton, Joe McPhee, Andy Moor, Jason Moran, Ikue Mori, Joe Morris, Matthias Muche, Paal Nilssen-Love, Eddie Prevóst, Mette Rasmussen, Tom Rainey, Eric Revis, Jasper Stadhouders, Chad Taylor, John Tilbury, Mars Williams, and Nate Wooley). His current group activity includes the bands Edition Redux, Lean Left, The DKV Trio, DEK, his large ensemble Entr’acte, the ongoing Momentum projects; duos with Terrie Ex, Christof Kurzmann, Damon Locks, Paal Nilssen-Love, Mars Williams, and Nate Wooley; and work as a solo performer.

James Meger is an active bassist and composer working primarily in the fields of jazz, free improvisation and rock music. He has worked with many local and international players such as Wayne Horvitz, Lori Freedman, Ig Henneman and Kris Davis and plays in many ensembles such as: Ron Samworth’s Dogs Do Dream, Peggy Lee’s Echo Painting, Sick Boss, The Alicia Hansen band, The Bruno Hubert Trio, Ten Thousand Wolves, The Now Orchestra, Cow Trance and many more. 

Kenton Loewen is known mainly as a seasoned professional drummer. He has worked extensively in the improvisation world with artists such as Gord Grdina, Mats Gustafsson, Fredrik Lundqvist, Michael Moore, Mark Helias and Francois Houle. Kenton has also played in Po' Girl, Submission Hold, Mother Mother, Josh Martinez and the Pissed Off Wild and was a member of Dan Mangan + Blacksmith.

Allotropes is the post-bop trio of saxophonist/clarinetist/composer Shane Krause, bassist Trav Short and drummer Miles Fuller. Their music draws inspiration from free jazz, post-bop jazz, free improvisation and avant-garde composition. They perform largely Krause's compositions, mixed with some free improvisations and compositions by inspirational composers including Carla Bley, Ornette Coleman and Steve Lacy.
