About the show

I am grateful to announce that I have been asked by my good friends at the Open Space Arts Society to curate a show as the space has been recently opened again to the public after renovations were made to install an elevator to make this space more accessible!

Together we collaboratively present to you!:

Sisiyutł and the Balance Between Dark and Light: A Kwakwa̲ka̲’wakw Cabaret!

-

Featuring different generations of kwakwa̲ka̲’wakw artists of various genres and mediums:

Krystal Cook

PINDN & The Naion of Creation

Nenagwas Naomi Triebwasser

& Zero! (Mary-Ann Whonnock)

I was asked to think of a theme throughout the night. I thought of the teachings of the sisiyutł (two headed sea serpent) my GraMaMa Liz shared with me one day about how the great supernatural being can represent many things such as the balance we should maintain between the the choices we have and make in life. Between the good and the bad, the dark and the light and so on and so forth.

With this unique, meaningful, fun and wild variety show I hope to highlight and showcase and be apart of this collective group of kwakwa̲ka̲’wakw artists and storytellers who are expressing ourselves in these contemporary ways through the healing power of creativity as we share songs, writings and stories which explore this idea of balance as we collectively and surely rise above, despite oppression and the depression and anxieties caused by colonialism and it’s many everlasting effects.
